Meet John

Our culture encourages instant gratification. Quick meals, on demand entertainment, and a pill for anything is commonplace.  Personal trainers need to work with a client 24/7 to even make a dent in these habits. I became a Health Coach and created this website to educate you, your family and friends in a cost and time effective manner. My first job with a national corporate wellness company was to encourage employees to obtain a yearly physical and quit smoking. No wonder corporate wellness is getting a bad name! Shortly after, I realized I could do better. Thanks for learning how Real Recess is changing lives!

Born in Hollidaysburg, PA to a father and mother who both owned small businesses, I was destined to become an entrepreneur. My father was fighting cancer as I grew up so I habitually saw him juicing vegetables, swimming at the YMCA, and doing push-ups in the house to stay healthy. He and my mother ensured that both my brothers and I stayed healthy by not allowing us to leave the dinner table until our plates were clean and glass of milk gone. They had us in almost every activity from gymnastics to skating and from Boy Scouts to band. (That might be where I got my hustle from.) This thirst for new experiences has brought me to live in Pennsylvania, Arizona, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and back. I earned an undergraduate degree from West Chester University in Kinesiology with a minor in Coaching. The work world has given me experience as a disc jockey MC, mountain bike tour guide, concert stage hand, cheerleading coach, personal trainer, luxury resort staff, and many more odd jobs.

Friends, family, and even acquaintances regularly asked during these travels, "Would you write me a workout program?" Knowing it was probably going to end up lost and unused somewhere, I reluctantly spent hours on each program. This ongoing scenario made me think of the old saying, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." I had to create an easy way for people to understand health and wellness. But something else was missing! How do I get clients to take action and actually use the program?  Real Recess originated as an attempt to solve this ever-occurring scenario.  The first instance of Real Recess was in a physical therapy studio where a friend worked. She asked me to write her a program and I said, "Let me teach you how I make a program fit your schedule". It saved me time and she understood why. My philosophy was to improve the athleticism of each person through fun game type exercises like they used to do on the playground.  Real Recess moved into a 300 square foot area behind a sports performance center and targeted parents. Next, Recess moved into a larger 3,000 square foot area inside a cheerleading gym. After a year, I rented a brand new 7,500 square foot warehouse for 9-5ers to take a Real Recess break from work. Attendance did not meet expectations. I blame it on location. This was when the new Real Recess business plan formed. I provide you with all the information you need on my website to take 10 second to 10 minute Recess breaks at home or work. In exchange for this free health coaching, you tell your company about how Real Recess can provide certified Health Coaches. Small breaks lead to better health and better health leads to more confidence. A confident employee is a productive one.

In my free time, I still enjoy exploring new places by foot, bike, canoe, or skis. I love Pennsylvania and always plan on having a home here. Eventually I see Real Recess being a household concept as traditional living room furniture is replaced with stretching mats and hanging furniture.  My mission has always been to encourage people to Take a Break and Be Active.
